When a person sees the Milky Way at night they are only seeing about 0.0000025% of the galaxy's hundreds of billions of stars.
A stunning night in Haleakala National Park on the Island of Maui. Moonlight lighting the Haleakala Crater with the Milky Way posted horizon to horizon overhead on a mid-summer night. In the distance the glow from the Lava Flow in lower Puna, shadowed by Mauna Kea on the Big Island. Sometimes one needs to step back to see the big picture
Mars rising in Retrograde over the Lava Flow in Lower Puna, Big Island. Framed by the horizon to horizon mid-summer Milky Way with Meteors firing through. What an appropriate Mars passage that began in May coinciding with the start of the Lava Flow in lower Puna. A very special night, especially with Mars at its closest point to Planet Earth in over 15 years
Total Lunar Eclipse viewed from the slopes of Mauna Kea .As a landscape photographer I am most interested in recording astronomy events as part of a view including earth. The fascinating part was that totality occurred shortly after sunset, low on the horizon. This allowed me to capture it and tie it into the landscape on teh mountain, in this case one of my favorite trees. The moon, bright orange/red during the totality of the eclipse nearly one hour, with a strong 3D look to it. It was breathtaking and an event I won't soon forget.
I was on a hike to a special location. For some reason, mainly the leading curve of the road and the lineup of the Galactic Center with the tree line, I popped off a couple of shots while light painting the road. What I had planned couldn't touch this impromptu capture. When I see this image it's a reminder to always stay open to the possibilities that can arrive at any moment.
Rare single shot image of the Milky Way and a Moonbow over Halemaumau Caldera at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
There are many kinds of rainbows. Na Po Mokole, is seen only by a few. It is the Spirit rainbow. Many healings take place at this time, for our spirit family knows our needs and tries to help us. There is no greater blessing on earth than the blessing of the Night Rainbow.
This image 'Energy Download' was created while leading a summer Night Sky Class with a small group of students up on Mauna Kea. I never tire of images like these popping up on my camera screen and it is most definitely energizing. Needless to say everyone in the class had an stellar time. It's one of my favorite images of the Milky Way from this year and I wasn't disappointed at all with meteor dropping right into the Galactic Center
